Smoke alarms for Fire Prevention month

· By Emily Eagan

In honor of October being Fire Prevention month, we want to talk about the importance of smoke alarms, and reminders on how to use them.

When your home has working smoke alarms, the risk of dying in a house fire is cut by 60 percent according to the latest NFPA research. But often times smoke alarms are not used, or not used properly.

  • More than one-third of home fire deaths result from fires in which no smoke alarms are present.
  • The risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms.
  • Roughly three out of five deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms, or non working ones.

It is best to have smoke alarms installed on every level of your home, in every sleeping room, and outside of each sleeping room. Be sure to test all smoke alarms every month. Working smoke alarms are an important part of a fire escape plan in your home.

Following these guidelines and tips is vital in ensuring safety during a fire emergency for you, your family, your pets, and your home. If you have any questions regarding smoke alarms or other home fire safety questions, contact the Marion Fire Department.
