May is Wildfire Prevention and Preparedness month
May is Wildfire Prevention and Preparedness Month, it's the time of year when the weather starts to become warmer and wildland vegetation begins to dry out, signaling the need to begin planning for wildfires.
Having a month dedicated to wildfire awareness aims to promote prevention and preparedness among areas that are prone to wildfires.
The absolute first line of defense in wildfire preparedness is creating defensible space. Defensible space is a buffer zone that is created between a structure and the surrounding wildland area aid in the following:
- Stop or slow the spread of fire.
- Protect the home from embers and heat.
- Give firefighters a safe area to defend the property.
Staying informed helps greatly with preparedness. A very simple way to stay informed, is to sign up for emergency alerts in your area, and familiarizing yourself with the burning rules and regulations for your area.
Developing an evacuation plan, putting together an emergency kit, fireproofing your home, and promoting preparedness for the event of a wildfire are more ways to bring attention to and observe the purpose of the month.
Being prepared is the best thing you can do for your home, family, animals, and community.
